Bessie Coleman Kids T-Shirt

$35.00

Bessie Coleman (1892 –1926) was a civil aviator. She soared across the sky as the first African American and the first Native American woman pilot. Known for performing flying tricks, Coleman earned nicknames; “Brave Bessie,” “Queen Bess,” Bessie learned French in order to be accepted in aviation school at Caudron Brothers' School of Aviation in Le Crotoy, France. She received her international pilot’s license in 1921 from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. Bessie had to go to school in France because no school in America would accept her because she was African American and a woman. She became famous in both America and Europe. She toured the country giving flight lessons, performing in-flight shows, and encouraging African Americans and women to learn how to fly.
