Shirley Chisholm Kids T-Shirt
In 1968 Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005) became the first African American congresswoman. Shirley represented New York State in the U.S. House of representatives. She was also the first African American to campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
In her career as a Congresswoman Shirley advocated for minority education and employment opportunities. Shirley was also a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
- Shirley survived three assassination attempts during her campaign for the presidency.
- In 1951 she earned her master’s degree in elementary education from Columbia University’s Teachers College.
- Shirley was named was honorary co-president of the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (NARAL).
